Polygon collaborates with Ocean Conservation Exploration and Education Foundation, a world-class ocean conservation NGO, to advance ocean conservation initiatives and literacy.
Decentralized Ethereum scaling platform, Polygon, has announced a collaboration with the Ocean Conservation Exploration and Education Foundation (OCEEF), a world-class ocean conservation NGO. The partnership will see them working hand-in-hand to promote ocean literacy and advance ocean conservation initiatives.
Polygon made the announcement via its official Twitter account. “The aim is to offer interactive experiences via a governance platform where participants can assist in key decisions,” said the tweet.
More Details on Polygon and OCEEF’s Collab
Polygon believes that creating awareness and making people more responsive to the issue of ocean conservation is best done entertainingly. Through its partnership with OCEEF, the scaling platform aims to advance ocean literacy by “finding new and engaging ways to give people exposure to deep-sea missions.” On the part of OCEEF, the new partnership will allow it to promote ocean conservation initiatives and deep sea exploration to Web3.
“The shared goal of this effort is to ensure that the ocean and its preservation remain the topics of discussion for generations to come,” Polygon shared in the statement.
Through Polygon and OCEEF’s collaboration, OCEEF can open its doors to the RV Odyssey, one of the most advanced ocean research vessels worldwide, via a governance platform. Such would allow people to explore all of the ship’s facilities.
They would also be able to look into real-time data through immersive, interactive experiences in the Metaverse. Participants would also play a primary role in deciding RV Odyssey’s future itinerary and research. They can also engage in on-board missions through the Metaverse and other Web3 tools.
Polygon and OCEEF’s Shared Objectives
Aside from supporting OCEEF’s ocean conservation undertakings through the sale of NFTs, Polygon’s governance platform will also help OCEEF increase engagement. Participants in the project will be able to assist in making decisions on three areas—missions, participation, and location.
Under “missions,” the community would be able to lend their support in selecting missions from a shortlist based on recommendations from the scientific committee.
In “participation,” OCEEF will open submissions to enable students to join the team on board. It will also select groups for each mission based on applications received. Students will also get the opportunity to participate in dives, which will be made available through NFTs that would fund the project.
Finally, for “locations,” the community would be allowed to select countries for future itineraries. OCEEF can get Special Research Permits and perform operations in unique locations that otherwise are closed to the public.
“Being able to facilitate a global endeavor such as the one that OCEEF is undertaking is very humbling,” said Sandeep Nailwal, co-founder of Polygon. “I know that our technology is up to the task of bringing these types of immersive, educational, and change-making experiences to people all over the globe.”
In April, Polygon started its sustainability journey when its core team pledged its commitment to becoming carbon negative by the end of 2022. They also committed $20 million to climate-related projects. Since then, Polygon has achieved a carbon-neutral status after eliminating 104,794 tonnes of greenhouse gasses, which is more than the network’s entire CO2 debt since its inception.
Speaking at the Green Blockchain Summit 2.0, which Polygon hosted, OCEEF founder Alex Moukas discussed the significance of this partnership. He also covered how OCEEF plans to take advantage of Polygon’s blockchain technology to save the oceans.
“Using our Polygon partnership and its carbon-neutral tech as a launchpad, we will be using technology to democratize access to the vessel through multiple Web3 platforms as well as provide participants with the ability to help decide the vessel’s future itinerary and research.”
