Let’s take a closer look at Chikn, an adventurous on-chain game exclusively launched on Avalanche that’s got everyone talking about Chikn NFTs that lay $EGG.
“The Chikn has flown the coop!” We repeat, “The Chikn has flown the coop!” NFT enthusiasts the world over know what we’re talking about, but for those coming across the word for the first time, allow us to introduce you to the world of Chikn farming.
Getting to Know the Chikn NFT
Launched in November 2021, Chikn is a novel concept demonstrating what non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and emissions tokens are capable of in a straightforward format—a CHIKN LAY $EGG. Believe it or not, this adventurous on-chain game exclusively launched on Avalanche has a compact core team behind it—two full-stack developers, three business development officers, and a designer.
“We saw an opportunity in the NFT boom and pulled a ‘Wayne Gretzky’—navigating to where the puck is going to be rather than where the puck is,” said the core team.
So, how did the whole concept start? Chikn started from a piece of generative art software built by one of its full-stack developers. The team found the unconventional idea hilarious, so they onboarded a primary designer.
“It was really unconventional and unexpected, but the best ideas often aren’t planned for but emerge organically. You just grab them and run,” they said.
And thus, Chikn was born from a simple proof of concept.
Meet the Coop
Chikn NFT falls under the gaming/Metaverse category. Still, unlike other games that require active participation from players, Chikn is mainly idle gaming—roost, feed, farm, and breed—with a little active gaming on the side—mini-games, coqfight.
Barely a month after its launch, 10,000 Chikn NFTs were minted on December 12, 2021, with all of them getting minted within six days of dropping for 1 AVAX (Avalanche’s native token) each. However, this is only the beginning of Chikn’s journey through the NFT space.
That’s because the Chikns are no ordinary NFTs. These algorithmically-generated chikn are part of a much larger and permanently expanding NFT and gaming ecosystem.
At the core of Chikn’s mission is community. Thus, Chikn is approachable, easy to understand, and open to various demographics. Yes, you don’t need to be an NFT OG to be part of the Chikn army.
Following the release of the Chikn NFTs, there were two other releases—FarmLand NFT and Roostr NFT. Here’s a quick look at both, with the description, provided verbatim.
- FarmLand NFT—Burn $EGG on your FarmLand to upgrade its utility, and [for] every five expansions, new tiles are randomly added. Each tile is a unique trait that contributes to the rarity of your FarmLand – every new tile is a mini-mint!
- Roostr NFT—Roostr was the biggest mint in the history of AVAX—setting unprecedented levels of blockchain activity. With a gamified $EGG burn race for higher rarities, the mint burned over 1.2m $EGG Tokens for only 4000 of the supply.
What Can You Do with Your Chikn?
Earlier, we said that Chikn NFTs follow a straightforward format—all Chikn lay $EGG. Simple enough, right? However, let’s up the ante further. “A biggr Chikn lay more $EGG than smol Chikn.” Are you catching up? Yes, the bigger your Chikn grows, the more $EGG it lays.
You need to roost your Chikn at the Chikn farm for it to lay $EGG tokens. Then, you need to stake your $EGG to earn $FEED tokens that you will use to feed your Chikn to make it bigger.
Concisely, Chikn is supported by a tri-token architecture inspired by the Avalanche triangle. This architecture combines aesthetic and technical symbology built around this trifecta: Chikn NFTs, $EGG, and $FEED.
The focal point is that Chikn NFTs represent a “key” to the emissions token that unlocks the power of upgradable NFTs. Because the supply of NFTs is limited, owners can upgrade their Chikn NFTs permanently to produce substantially increasing $EGG using $FEED.
Chikn Traits
Each of the 10,000 Chikns is no ordinary Chikn. There are dapper Chikns, degen Chikns, and some are gifted with the rarest materials, making them one-of-a-Chikn-kind. Suffice it to say that whatever your Chikn looks like, it will have significant advantages in the game if it gets bigger. And as we have repeatedly been saying, you make your Chikn bigger with $EGG and $FEED.
Each Chikn trait will correspond to its attributes that are advantageous for different in-game scenarios. “Legendaries” refer to Chikns with more traits on average than “Common Chooks.” Still, both lay the same number of $EGG, thereby supporting equal-opportunities foundations.
The Chikn NFTs’ visual traits remain the same from the time of minting. Nevertheless, the developers may opt to add supplementary Chikn characteristics along the way.
Chikn’s Utility Tokens
We’ve been talking about $EGG and $FEED for a while now. However, we realized we hadn’t explained why they matter yet. So here goes.
In the Chikn ecosystem, $EGG is the fuel needed to run the coop. You can search high and low within the NFT space, but no other NFT can ever lay $EGG except Chikn NFTs. So, what purpose does the $EGG serve?
Simply put, the utility token of the Chikn ecosystem fuels gamification, governance, and the future decentralized autonomous organization (DAO). What about the $FEED?
As the previous section implies, $FEED is used to make your Chikn bigger. You get $FEED by staking the $EGG you receive at Chikn farm, and once you have enough, you can feed it to your Chikn to grow it because a bigger Chikn lays more $EGG.
Remember, you can upgrade or make your Chikn bigger until the supply of $FEED runs out. Incidentally, using $EGG and $FEED permanently burns both from the overall supply; thus, they eventually become deflationary to counteract inflation.
Chikn Strategies
The Chikn gameplay may be passive, but that doesn’t mean you don’t need to strategize. From an $EGG-laying perspective, it is best to level up all Chikn NFTs equally, as it will result in optimal egg production.
Chikn Gamification
The gamification aspect of the Chikn has been core to its idle gameplay and DeFir components, as it gives users an engaging and rewarding way to interact with NFTs and cryptocurrencies. It has three primary forms in the Chikn ecosystem:
- Active game—Real-time multiplayer game experience (coqfighting)
- Idle games—Long-term, goal-oriented gameplay
- Mini-games—Socially-based, strategic gameplay
Active Game
The gamification aspect of the Chikn ecosystem revolves around the central idea of a play-and-earn active game. The team’s long-term vision is very much on track, with the team continuing to develop the assets and mechanics in conformity with the gameplay.
Coqfight, which we mentioned in the beginning, is a massive undertaking in Chikn’s active game form and will probably take longer to release.
Mini-Games
The mini-games have recently been added to Chikn’s roadmap and fall between active and idle gameplay, focusing on social interaction. It means players will have to base their decisions on predictions about other players’ likely actions, and these other players are doing the same with you.
Cooperation and deception, allegiances, and subterfuge are the social prediction elements integrated with Chikn’s Discord. So if you haven’t joined yet, you’re missing so much! Leverage the rarity and size (KG) of your Roostr or Chikn NFT for an edge, and perhaps you could win $EGG, $FERT, or $FEED.
Idle Gameplay
The focal point of the idle gameplay, as has been discussed throughout most of this article, is feeding Chikns to make the bigger and lay more $EGGs. However, there is a second significant addition to the idle gameplay in the form of foraging. Foraging is basically an evolved version of the idle gameplay mechanics based on the traits of FarmLand NFTs and their generated resources.
Here, players must send their Chikn and Roostr to forage on their FarmLand to generate said resources passively. You can boost foraged resources by discovering natural synergies between your Chikn or Roostr’s traits and your FarmLand.
Foraged resources set the cornerstone for a totally separate crafting mechanic that involves combining resources to discover new treasures. Eventually, players can forage their resources into real NFTs that will provide them boosts and benefits across the Chikn farm.
The next addition is breeding, wherein users can combine a Chikn, Roostr, $EGG, and $FERT to breed a new generation of NFTs. These NFTs will have a larger supply and serve as an entry point for new users to compete in mini-games and foraging, with the potential of bootstrapping toward a Chikn or Roostr.
Finally, there’s renting. The core team is anticipating increased demand for Chikn and Roostr with unique traits and rarities. So they added renting to the roadmap, allowing non-custodial borrowing of any NFT offered on the market on the part of the users.
As the utility and desirability of the NFTs’ different traits fluctuate, NFT owners will have ample opportunities to capitalize through renting; thus, they add a new dimension of liquidity to the ecosystem.
Roadmap for Chikn
So far, most of the paths on Chikn’s roadmap have gone live. Only a few remaining updates for Q1 2022 remain. Some of the exciting updates to watch out for include the following:
- Eggnite—The Chikn Launchpad, which will take NFTs to the next level
- The Bokchain—An Avalanche subnet, which will be home to the Chikn Metaverse
A slew of minor updates and quality-of-life improvements across the board are in the offing. These include a continual website, marketplace, Discord tweaks, and bulk roosting and naming services.
There could even be a Roostr daycare, allowing users to earn $FERT and level up their Roostrs passively. New $EGG pairs on the liquidity provider (LP) Farm are also being eyed to strengthen $EGG’s stability and liquidity.
Users can also watch out for the new Chikn radio mixes, new leaderboards, swaps, offers, auctions, and so much more. So, check back for updates because, as they said, the Chikns are only getting started.
