More on FIFA+ Collect
The FIFA+ Collect NFT platform was created as part of the partnership with Algorand, a blockchain firm, which the organization announced earlier this year. It will be remembered that the blockchain technology firm and FIFA agreed on a sponsorship and technical partnership deal that will see them working together at the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar.
“The commitment FIFA has made to bridge to Web3, enabled by Algorand, is a testament to their innovative spirit and desire to directly and seamlessly engage with football fans,” said the company’s interim CEO, W. Sean Ford.
As mentioned earlier, the digital collectibles offered through the FIFA+ Collect platform will showcase memorable moments from football matches over the years. The collections will also feature iconic art and imagery from the FIFA World Cup and FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments.
Think along the lines of the handling goal that Argentine player Diego Maradona scored during the Argentina versus England quarter-finals match of the 1986 FIFA World Cup, which came to be known as “Hand of God.” Or Carli Lloyd’s 16-minute hat trick during the 2015 Final.
“This exciting announcement makes FIFA collectibles available to any football fan, democratizing the ability to own a part of the FIFA World Cup,” commented FIFA Chief Business Officer Romy Gai.
He elaborates, “Fandom is changing, and football fans around the world engage with the game in new and exciting ways … Just like sports memorabilia and stickers, this is an accessible opportunity for fans around the world to engage with their favorite players, moments and more on new platforms.”
FIFA+ Collect will be available on FIFA+, the organization’s digital platform. It is where users are given access to live soccer games worldwide. The digital platform also features interactive games, news, tournament information, and some more original content.
The FIFA+ Collect NFT platform will initially be launched in three languages—English, French, and Spanish—across the web and mobile devices. Nevertheless, the platform is undergoing development so it can support more languages.
What Is FIFA?
As mentioned in the get-go, FIFA is the international governing body of football, beach football, and futsal. It was established in 1904 to look after an international competition among a handful of nations.
The organization hosted the first FIFA World Cup in Uruguay in 1930, which marked the beginning of the competition that we know of to this day. Currently, 211 national associations are FIFA members. Its main headquarters are in Zurich, Switzerland, with Gianni Infantino at the helm.
Over the years, FIFA has been at the forefront of various controversies, the latest focusing on the organization’s decision to host the 2022 Men’s World Cup in Qatar. Some in the football community raised issues regarding the human rights of the people building the competition’s stadium and Qatar’s views on homosexuality.
