High-end vinyl toymaker SuperPlastic is launching a new line of Mutant Ape Yacht Club-inspired vinyl toys, “Meet the Melvins.” The Mutant Ape vinyl toys will launch on August 18.
SuperPlastic, the high-end vinyl toymaker, is back with another Ape family collaboration. This time, the company is dropping vinyl toys inspired by a character from the Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC) NFT collection. The Mutant Ape vinyl toys are dropping Thursday, August 18.
The new line of vinyl toys will be called “Meet the Melvins,” and there will be two sets of toys. The announcement was made via SuperPlastic’s official Twitter account.
A Closer Look at the Mutant Ape Vinyl Toys
The Meet the Melvins Mutant Ape vinyl toys are the new addition to the SuperPlastic SuperBored collection. The toy line is based on MAYC #1590, a six-trait M1 black fur Mutant Ape with a gold grill grin wearing sunglasses and a fisherman’s hat.
As per SuperPlastic’s announcement, there will be two colorways for the Mutant Ape vinyl toys. One colorway would be exclusively available to SuperPlastic NFT or MAYC NFT holders, while the other colorway would be available to the public.
“Meet the Melvins, the new SuperBored vinyl that features ridiculously mutated sculpts in two unique colorways that look like they’ve come straight from Davey Jones’ locker,” says the SuperPlastic website. “The Melvin’s stand at 13-INCHES featuring chromed-out grills and outfits that are practically falling off with how mutilated they are.”
Upon launch, the Mutant Ape vinyl toys allotted for SuperPlastic and MAYC NFT holders will only be available for 30 minutes beginning 1 PM EST on August 18. Meanwhile, the public edition of the Mutant Ape vinyl toys will be available at 2 PM EST on the same day. The public will have 30 minutes to avail of the toys. Both editions will cost $222 in fiat currency.
In connection with the release of the Mutant Ape vinyl toys, SuperPlastic is holding a giveaway on Twitter. There will only be one winner of both Mutant Ape vinyl toy colorways. To enter the giveaway and be eligible to win, a participant must be a follower of Superplastic’s Twitter account, retweet the original tweet, and tag a friend. The giveaway is open until 4:20 PM EST, August 17.
SuperPlastic and the Ape Family
It will be remembered that SuperPlastic also collaborated with Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) in April this year. The toy line was also part of the SuperBored collection and featured five 13-inch vinyl art toys inspired by the BAYC’s main ape, Curtis.
The toys were exclusive for BAYC NFT holders and, like the Melvins, cost $222. The collection sold out in no time.
The Mutant Ape vinyl toys set to release on Thursday show signs of massive improvement over the previous iteration. Many BAYC holders were dismayed by the colorway of the last toy line and didn’t hold back from expressing their disappointment on social media.
Some said the toys’ colorway looked unfinished. And based on the lackluster feedback received, SuperPlastic readily announced that it would release “an even more rad MAYC” toy for fans. Perhaps the Mutant Ape vinyl toys with the improved colorway will be more than enough to appease the fans.
The Mutant Ape vinyl toys’ launch comes on the heels of another SuperPlastic collaboration released last weekend. Last Sunday, SuperPlastic dropped the final installment of the SUPERGUCCI NFT, its partnership with Italian luxury goods brand Gucci.
Paul Budnitz, CEO and Founder of SuperPlastic, also announced an upcoming Guccighost project scheduled for September, apart from new experiential art spaces across several American cities next year.
SuperPlastic’s flagship store on Prince Street, Manhattan, has just recently opened.
