Together with digital artist Beeple, pop icon Madonna will be launching a three-video NFT collaboration that is somewhat NSFW.
Pop culture icon Madonna is fully embracing her journey into the Metaverse. However, this time, she’s doing more than buying a Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT and using it as her Twitter profile picture.
In this collaboration with digital artist Beeple, Madonna will be appearing in three NFT videos as a very naked 3D CGI avatar. The collection will be called “Mother of Creation” and will feature Madonna giving birth in different settings.
The Meaning Behind “Mother of Creation”
In a tweet, Madonna shared a video of her and Beeple (real name Mike Winkelmann) in an interview. Madonna disclosed that she and Beeple started collaborating on her first-ever NFTs last year. Incidentally, Beeple sold an NFT for $69 million a year ago.
“We set out to create something that is absolutely and utterly connected to the idea of creation and motherhood,” Madonna said of her NFTs. Thus, a trio of digitally-rendered collectibles was born.
Deemed a “labor of love,” the videos cast Madonna in the role of a mother creating life. In the first video in the series, the “Like a Virgin” singer’s avatar can be seen giving birth to a fast-growing tree. Aptly titled “Mother of Nature,” the NFT video carries plenty of emotional weight through its audio.
What is worth noting is the surrealistic and disturbing visuals, which are done in classic Beeple fashion. The outcome highlights the disparity between the female form’s softness and the utter sterility of a research laboratory. Beeple said he is “insanely honored” to have worked with Madonna on these videos.
Some might think the NFT videos from Madonna and Beeple are somewhat bizarrely erotic. However, Madonna is quick to assure that the videos, which will be auctioned this Wednesday on SuperRare, are pretty straightforward in meaning.
“The opening of each video is essentially me giving birth,” she added. “I’m doing what women have been doing since the beginning of time, which is giving birth. But on a more existential level, I’m giving birth to art, and creativity, and we would be lost without both.”
The “Mother of Creation” videos, an NFT triptych representing a unique type of birth in a contemporary world, are expected to raise money for various charities. As per the project’s website, the three charities that will benefit from the proceeds of the NFT videos are:
- The Voices of Children Foundation (a foundation focused on helping Ukrainian children)
- The City of Joy (a charity helping female survivors of violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo)
- Black Mama’s Bail Out (a charity for incarcerated black women).
As part of the NFT videos’ launch, cryptocurrency platform MoonPay would be donating $300,000, with the abovementioned charities receiving $100,000 each.
The second video is “Mother of Evolution,” which shows how rebirth can still happen despite chaos and catastrophe. The video likewise contains lyrics from Madonna’s song, “Justify My Love,” and original music by Igor Bardykin.
The final video is “Mother of Technology,” which offers a darker take on the relationship between technology and humanity.
Madonna said the NFT videos would be up for auction on the SuperRare NFT marketplace on Wednesday, May 11 at 3 pm PST / 6 pm EST.
