Legendary football player turned businessman David Beckham ramps up his Web3 campaign by filing several NFT and Metaverse-related trademarks.
David Beckham is the latest in a long list of big names from the world of sports, fast food, music, healthcare, finance, and fashion that have filed NFT and Metaverse-related trademark applications.
The Inter Miami FC co-owner plans to bring virtual merchandise—clothing, footwear, and headgear—to the immersive Web3 space based on the applications filed. It appears Beckham wants to offer his global fanbase the chance to wear his brand in whatever virtual world they are part of.
This move, along with the irrefutable number of trademark applications in the United States alone, is a testament to the groundbreaking change in people’s attitude towards NFTs and the Metaverse.
Coverage of Trademark Applications
On Monday, renowned trademark attorney Mike Kondoudis shared news of the filing on Twitter. However, as per the details Kondoudis shared, Beckham filed three trademark applications with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on April 19.
In his tweet, Kondoudis said, “the international football star has filed 3 trademark applications hinting at plans for NFTS + digital tokens; virtual clothing + footwear + headgear; and virtual performances + entertainment events.”
Per the trademark applications filed, the A-list celebrity plans to open a virtual retail store where users can purchase virtual goods. Part of Beckham’s Metaverse strategy is aimed at the entertainment industry based on trademarks filed for online non-downloadable virtual goods and virtual recreational entertainment services, leisure, and virtual streaming content, among others.
DB Ventures Journeys into the Metaverse
The filing of the trademarks was done through Beckham’s DB Ventures Limited, a global brand management company. Early this year, Beckham sold 55% of DB Ventures Ltd. to Authentic Brands Group (ABG), a retail and entertainment corporation. ABG owns Forever 21 and Barneys New York and the rights to Elvis Presley and Shaquille O’Neal.
The announcement comes on the heels of Beckham’s collaboration with DigitalBits. In March, Beckham signed on to become DigitalBits’ brand ambassador. DigitalBits is a layer one blockchain protocol that enables the tokenization of assets, including NFTs. The partnership will see Beckham and DigitalBits launching a series of NFT drops and blockchain assets.
“Beckham will embark on a series of exciting projects that will demonstrate the power and potential of DigitalBits blockchain technology, which is fast and eco-friendly compared to many other platforms,” said DigitalBits.
“As DigitalBits is the Blockchain for Brands, Beckham will utilize his extensive experience and relationships working with global brands including Adidas, Maserati, Tudor, Sands, Diageo, and EA,” they added.
Beckham is not the first and only sports icon who has entered the digital space as a brand ambassador. Tennis grand slam champion Naomi Osaka is currently the brand ambassador for FTX. She joined the ranks of seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady and three-time NBA champion Steph Curry, who signed up as FTX global brand ambassadors in 2021.
