Takashi Murakami’s iconic motif, which has adorned paintings and even pillows for decades, travels down a new road as it expands with the Japanese artist’s debut release in the Metaverse.
Takashi Murakami hardly needs an introduction. However, the famous Japanese artist is feeling his way around a new world—the Metaverse—as he prepares to debut an NFT project called Murakami.Flowers.
Murakami is a trailblazing Japanese contemporary artist who has helped shape 21st-century art. Murakami can be called an artist of the people, with his work firmly ingrained in art history books and major collections. What’s noteworthy about his art is its accessible pricing as merchandise.
He has already collaborated with luxury fashion brands Louis Vuitton and Marc Jacobs and musicians Kanye West and Billie Eilish, to name a few. That’s before he decided to dip his feet in the Metaverse with his blockbuster NFT collaboration with RTFKT, a company that Nike recently acquired.
After Murakami’s successful baptism of fire in the NFT space, he announced the release of Murakami.Flowers—digital, pixelated interpretations of his adored and iconic flowers design. The NFT collection will feature Murakami’s favorite subject—flowers—in a cute, cartoonish appearance that merges classic Japanese paintings inspired by anime and what Murakami describes as a “super flat” aesthetic. The 12-petal pixel art flowers in the Murakami.Flowers NFT collection will feature unique expressions, traits, and backgrounds.
Spring 2022 Release
In an interview with Architectural Digest, Murakami said his team has been working on Murakami.Flowers nonstop since last fall. And finally, after a false start in 2021, Murakami re-announced the project, saying that the Murakami.Flowers NFT project is ready for a Spring 2022 release.
“I’m sure there is still so much about this space that I don’t understand, and I’ll be needing a lot of guidance from everyone,” Murakami said in the announcement post.
Murakami’s first solo NFT project features a unique roadmap, including games, galleries, etc. The artist revealed the idea behind Murakami.Flowers started when he worked on dot-art imagery for a Tamagotchi-like mobile game on a simple black and white screen. His game producer told him about the outstanding success of well-known NFT projects CryptoPunks and Beeple. The duo decided that artwork could be used for NFTs; thus, Murakami.Flowers was born.
However, Murakami still hopes the mobile game inspired by Tamagotchi will push through. He aims to release the game by the end of 2022.
The Murakami.Flowers NFT collection will focus on Murakami’s iconic flowers art and endeavor to bridge the divide between the worlds of traditional art and NFT art through actual physical paintings and digital art.
